Banyan Global is managing the USAID Women’s Economic Empowerment Community of Practice (USAID WEE CoP) under the Gender Integration Technical Assistance (GITA) II task order. The USAID WEE CoP was established to encourage peer learning among its members and sharing of evidence through a variety of online engagement opportunities. Working with the USAID Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Hub, the USAID WEE CoP supports USAID contracting/agreement officers, program managers, gender advisors, and technical staff; implementing partners; private sector partners; existing networks and associations; and others from the wider donor and development community to accelerate women’s economic empowerment and gender equality.

The USAID WEE CoP currently has more than 700 members and continues to grow. USAID WEE CoP members are implementing nearly 100 activities in over 60 countries. These activities focus on recruiting, retaining, and promoting women in the workplace; entrepreneurship and access to finance, markets, and networks; and reducing discriminatory laws, employer practices, social norms, and gender-based violence including sexual harassment. Through the USAID WEE CoP, members share knowledge to better understand what works and what doesn’t, build mutually beneficial relationships, learn from the approaches, successes, and challenges of the activities; and discuss the WEE evidence-base.

Banyan Global participated in the first USAID WEE CoP (formerly the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Fund) event organized by USAID in February 2020, hosted in Washington, D.C. In Fall 2020, Banyan Global formally launched the USAID WEE CoP and has since hosted virtual learning events, compiled a robust resource index; published learning products such as a survey infographic and a technical knowledge brief; organized member-led coffee chats, published monthly newsletters, developed a private USAID WEE CoP LinkedIn group, and implemented member feedback surveys.
