Innovation in the Time of COVID: How Remote Capacity Building Will Help Advance Equitable Health-Commodity Supply Chain Distribution in Madagascar's Social Marketing Sector

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Improving Market Partnerships and Access to Commodities Together (IMPACT) program's gender and social inclusion (GESI) team, led by Banyan Global, and social marketing distribution team collaborated to integrate GESI concepts into the existing capacity-building curriculum for health commodities distribution agents. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic threat, the teams recognized that travel and in-person gatherings were limited, which prompted the development and implementation of an innovative remote-based training series.

IMPACT Program Celebrates World Contraception Day in Madagascar with Mass Communication Campaign

This World Contraception Day, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Improving Market Partnerships and Access to Commodities Together (IMPACT) program is supporting family planning and informed reproductive health choices alongside the Ministry of Health’s efforts to promote the dissemination of the new family planning law through a series of family planning-focused messages targeted to different audiences. The Banyan Global team, as the lead for IMPACT’s gender and social inclusion (GESI) work, was critical to the development of these messages.

Private Providers and Banks Meet the Challenges of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Following the outbreak of COVID-19 in early March 2020, the Madagascar government imposed a nationwide lockdown, restricting travel and limiting business activity within the country. Despite these constraints, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Sustaining Health Outcomes through the Private Sector Plus (SHOPS Plus) access to finance team continued to support private health facilities in providing essential healthcare services to their communities.

Maintaining the Private Sector’s Commitment to Providing Health Commodities during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Following the outbreak of COVID-19 infections in Madagascar in early 2020, the government imposed a nationwide lockdown restricting travel and limiting business activities within the country. Despite these constraints, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Improving Market Partnerships and Access to Commodities Together (IMPACT) Program team was committed to finding ways to support its private sector partners in continuing to provide vital health commodities to their communities during the crisis.

Banyan Global Supports USAID Missions to Carry Out COVID-specific Gender Analyses

In collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Office of Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, Banyan Global has developed a job aid tool under the USAID-funded Gender Integration and Technical Assistance (GITA) II task order to support USAID missions to carry out COVID-specific gender analyses of activities focused on COVID-19 risk mitigation and response. Banyan Global is also using the tool to carry out 17 COVID-specific gender analyses for USAID activities in Latin America and the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa, and Asia.

Youth Champions in Uganda on the Frontlines of the COVID-19 Pandemic Response

Under the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI)-funded Malaria Action Program for Districts (MAPD) in Uganda, Banyan Global supports youth champions in giving back to their communities through the Vijana Leo (My Community, My Responsibility) activity. When Yumbe Gender-Based Violence Network (YUGNET) set out to assess the health and financial effects of the COVID-19 pandemic within the villages in Yumbe town council, Leilah Chandiru, a MAPD youth champion from Charanga ward, was on the team of frontline community data collectors in a community gender-based violence (GBV) survey conducted by YUGNET during the lockdown period.

Youth Leading Youth for Village-based Entrepreneurship and Business Opportunities in Ethiopia

Eighteen-year-old Abraha Grimy has been a participant in the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Feed the Future Ethiopia Value Chain Activity’s (VCA) mentorship program in Enderta woreda, Felegselam kebele since December 2019. In his role as a mentor, Abraha provides advice to 10 youth mentees who live around his village.
