Banyan Global is a subcontractor to Chemonics International on the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Recycling in Jordan Activity (JRA). The JRA will work with private recycling firms, the commercial sector, and the Government of Jordan to increase commercial sector usage of recycling services in Amman, Jordan. The activity aims to expand and improve private sector-led recycling services, generate greater demand for and usage of recycling services within the Amman commercial sector, and increase local and national government support for solid waste management.

Banyan Global provides gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) integration across all three Activity components and ensures that JRA’s interventions are inclusive of marginalized groups, including women, informal waste pickers, people with disabilities, youth, and refugees. Banyan Global conducted a gender analysis from November 2020 to January 2021 that highlighted the role disadvantaged groups play in the market system, the perceptions of recycling value chain actors toward them, and the existing constraints and opportunities for these groups in the private recycling sector. Banyan Global also designed a GESI action plan that offers recommendations for short-, medium- and long-term activity interventions aimed at facilitating equitable opportunities for the participation and advancement of these marginalized groups in Jordan. Banyan Global is currently in the process of designing a GESI training for project staff based on the GESI action plan that will enable project staff to more effectively integrate GESI throughout project components and activities. Throughout the life of the project, Banyan Global will design and implement GESI-specific technical materials and GESI trainings to project staff and stakeholders and provide continuous support to ensure integration of GESI into the design, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of the JRA.
