Banyan Global was a subcontractor to Tetra Tech on the five-year Mali Sub-National Governance Project (SNGP). The SNGP advanced Mali’s decentralization process by creating and institutionalizing financial and asset-management procedures and by containing corruption. It also improved operational efficiency in the management of Mali’s financial resources between Bamako and the regions, ensuring that public funds intended for decentralized services were delivered effectively and transparently. Banyan Global conducted a gender analysis at project startup, which it used to design a gender action plan, to conduct gender-mainstreaming training for the SNGP team and its partners, and to design and implement targeted programming to bolster the project’s impact on gender equality and women’s empowerment. The programming fell largely under SNGP’s technical collaboration with its subcontractor WILDAF-Mali (Women in Law and Development in Africa), which Banyan Global staff managed on a day-to-day basis. WILDAF is a national and Pan African women’s network that provides training and capacity-building on gender-sensitive budgeting and women’s leadership at the regional level in Mali. It also leads advocacy activities on women and elections at the regional level.
