The Local Health System Sustainability (LHSS) Project in Mozambique supports the goals of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the government of Mozambique in efforts to advance health systems strengthening. Banyan Global contributes its strong technical qualifications in integrating gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) to provide technical support and quality assurance to ensure the Project integrates GESI in the HSS activities of LHSS Mozambique.

Banyan Global is co-conducting a gender analysis with the local LHSS Mozambique team to understand gender- and social norms-based barriers within the community to recruit women to serve as community health workers (CHWs), which will inform ways to ensure equal opportunity and career progression. Banyan Global is providing GESI technical support to the LHSS Mozambique team during the planning and implementation of the gender analysis, from its research protocol design and qualitative and quantitative data collection tools, to the data analysis and research synthesis of findings and report development. Based on the findings, Banyan Global will also integrate gender in human resources for health, specifically for supportive supervision and career progression of CHWs.

Banyan Global is a subcontractor to Abt Associates on the $209 million, five-year USAID-funded LHSS project under the Integrated Health Systems award that works globally in up to 52 countries to strengthen their health systems as a means to achieve universal health coverage and improve population health and well-being. With an eye toward empowering countries to transition away from donor support, the project is strengthening the capacity of local organizations to lead implementation. Banyan Global is responsible for providing technical assistance to promote gender integration and social inclusion in LHSS activities that strive to increase financial protection, population coverage, and service coverage of quality essential services, LHSS’s three priority areas. Banyan Global also supports work to increase private investment in the health sector.
