Louis “Louie” Alexander, principal associate at Banyan Global, participated in a panel presentation and discussion during the National Cooperative Business Association (NCBA CLUSA)’s 2019 Cooperative Impact Conference on October 4, 2019, in Washington, DC. The topic for the panel was the effectiveness of collective action models on giving youth agency and economic opportunity, as well as the various ways to attract and attain youth in collective association models that lead to positive economic and social outcomes. Mr. Alexander focused on Banyan Global’s work with at-risk youth on the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Empleando Futuros (Employing Futures) project in Honduras. Among other interventions, the project works with locally-appropriate collective models to attract youth to employment and self-employment pathways and reduce violence. The panel covered other examples from Central America and examples from Africa. It was moderated by Mike McCabe, USAID Youth Coordinator, and included experts from NCBA CLUSA, Global Communities, and Mastercard Foundation.
